Is war on Iran an election strategy to sink Hillary?
Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 04:40:43 PM PDT
The GOP has a slate full of losers and Bush has fully discredited the Party's brand. Chances for a GOP Presidential win in 2008, regardless of who the Dem nominee is, are slim to none. That is, given the EXISTING political dynamic.
But what if Bush bombs Iran? And what if Hillary is the nominee?
I submit that such a scenario would so fracture the Democratic Base that a GOP victory would be likely. The Lieberman-Kyl Amendment is a critical piece of legislation. Hillary's support for it would box her in, such that, if Bush were to start bombing Iran tomorrow, she really couldn't complain as a legal matter. But having been politically neutered, Hillary would likely be savaged by a significant portion of the party. A mass defection, even if not likely before, would be assured.
What I want to know is where are the Deaniacs?

Is this it? Are we really going to nominate and then elect Hillary Clinton?
Don't Bother, Senator Feingold
Sun Jul 22, 2007 at 12:09:02 PM PDT
Senator,
There was a time when I supported censuring Bush and Cheney: as a shot across the WH bow, to give Bush and Cheney pause, to bring impeachable evidence to light, to alert the public to the gravity of the administration's mendacity and lawlessness.
But those reasons no longer apply. There is more than adequate evidence to support impeachment. Bush and Cheney have pushed all their chips all-in; a censure resolution will not affect their behavior. And the American people, by and large, get it. They don't need Russ Feingold to tell them this is a dishonest and lawless administration.
Flashback Friday: Lightbulb jokes!
Fri Jun 16, 2006 at 11:32:34 AM PDT
Blogs have arrived! Mark Warner buys cocktail weenies for Markos! Ad Nags rubs shoulders with front-pagers. Hillary shows respect for bloggers by staying away. (Not attending YKos to demonstrate "centrist" credibility means that bloggers are a force to be avoided! This is a step up from not attending because you just don't care.)
While many are commmenting on where blogs are going, I thought today would be a good day to remember where blogs have come from. Anyway, one of the best early bloggers was a guy named Ted Barlow, who went on to post at Crooked Timber.
Blogger State of the Union?
Wed Jan 25, 2006 at 09:14:18 AM PDT
In one week, George Bush will deliver his State of the Union address. In response, the Democrats have announced that VA Gov. Tim Kaine will deliver the Democratic rebuttal.
Many bloggers and blog readers have complained about the choice of Kaine. You can read some of the responses here, here, here, and here. Personally I would have picked Al Gore. If Democrats are angry that the media essentially buried his most recent speech (aside from reporting that the GOP found it absolutely LOOOONY), then they should have seized the opportunity to give Al a pulpit that the media could not ignore.
But regardless of the merits of the choice, wouldn't it be cool if progressive bloggers chose a spokesperson to deliver a SOTU/Rebuttal? More below.
Boston Globe Fluffs Gannon/Guckert
Wed May 18, 2005 at 08:31:09 AM PDT
Peter Canellos of the Boston Globe
manages a twofer. He combines a "Jeff Gannon, no big deal" story with a "the internet is the root of the media's lack of credibility" story. The title says it all: "Gannon's story left critics tarnished, too"
Yes, I feel so tarnished, Peter Canellos. Really, I need to take a shower.
Too much profanity on dKos?
Fri May 13, 2005 at 09:08:17 AM PDT
I'm interested in what people think about this issue. I'm as guilty of using foul language as the next person, so I'm not wagging my finger in indignation.
But I suspect most people here have a "less cursing for thee, but not for me" attitude. We may recoil at another's profanity-filled rant...right before we start one of our own. And it isn't as if there isn't plenty to rant about: theocratic bigots, chickenhawks sending unprepared troops off to Iraq, the dismantling of the middle class, etc. There are plenty of reasons to drop the "f-bomb".
Also, I wonder what new visitors think when they arrive and find a series of profanity-laden "news" stories. Is it a turn off? Are people less likely to refer others to diaries that might make their mother blush?
Bush earpiece...again
Sat Apr 30, 2005 at 08:49:41 AM PDT
(or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Corporate Media)
I didn't see this posted yet, so here's a link to Bush getting busted yet again for being wired up during a public speaking appearance. He can be clearly seen to pause, look down, and mutter "in a minute" after he is asked a question.
A Guckert sports reporter
Thu Apr 14, 2005 at 06:16:29 AM PDT
A local New York newspaper has
reported that there may be a sports-press version of Gannon/Guckert.
Mark Sabia, yellow-flagged microphone in tow, has been a regular in press boxes at Yankee Stadium, Shea and Madison Square Garden for years. He pushed his way to the front in post-game interviews, button-holed players for one-on-ones, and complained when he felt he wasn't being treated fairly. In other words, he was indistinguishable from the rest of the small-market television sports reporters in New York's locker rooms.
Except the outlet Sabia represents -- Westchester Cable Services -- doesn't exist
Hmm? Can anyone say "Talon News"?

Why are Atrios' comments so bad?
Wed Mar 16, 2005 at 05:12:35 PM PDT
Okay, here's a question that's been bugging me. Why the hell are the comments on Atrios' blog so terrible? Reading and posting there is unbearable. It's nothing but "frist!" and "Bush sucks!" comments. Can even Atrios slog through that crap?
I admit I just posted there for the first time in a long time. I'm not sure if I can bear to return to read any other comments.
Are there really people who do nothing but sit around and wait for Atrios to make another post so that they can type "frist!" as fast as possible? And these are Democrats?
What I find curious is that the Scoop features of dKos seem to not only filter out most rightie wingnuts but most of the embarassingly lame Democratic posts that Atrios' blog collects.
Any other theories or thoughts on this? Am I the only one who feels this way?
More on Framing and Fencing
Fri Mar 11, 2005 at 07:43:14 AM PDT
This diary is a response to Hudson's
earlier diary on framing. Hudson introduced the term "fencing" to a type of super-framing whereby you create mental barriers between a target audience and a competitor such that the audience will never consider what the competitor has to say. I think that Hudson touched on some important ideas that deserve further discussion.
Stephanie Herseth, sellout?
Wed Mar 09, 2005 at 06:17:46 AM PDT
Noam Scheiber's posted at TNR's &c. that the House New Democrat Coalition
sent a letter to Speaker Denny Hastert that urged that Hastert support the same bankruptcy legislation in the House as the Senate version that is now heading to the Senate floor.
I'll get back to what this "bankruptcy reform" movement means for "moderate Democrats" generally, but first I want to note that I was slightly surprised to see the name of one representative who had signed the letter: Stephanie Herseth.
Gannon/Guckert Latest
Mon Mar 07, 2005 at 02:06:07 PM PDT
New theory, I believe.
James Guckert may really be Johnny Gosch, who was once caught up in a sex ring. This theory has weird ties to Bush peré's sex ring and Hunter S. Thompson.
Just check it out.
Excerpt below the fold.
space's new wacky theory
Fri Feb 18, 2005 at 11:13:11 AM PDT
With the new revelations that Gannon/Guckert knew about Shock and Awe hours in advance, how's this for a theory:
Guckert was used to sleep with foreign dignataries visiting the WH and possibly blackmail them.
We already know from Bob Woodward that Saudi Prince Bandar Bush knew about Shock and Awe before Colin Powell.
What if the pillow talk was between Bandar and Guckert?

Gannon/Guckert: What probably happened
Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 08:53:42 PM PDT
This diary is an attempt to state what I believe most likely occurred in the Gannon/Guckert affair.
I know a lot of people don't want yet another Gannon diary clogging the recent diary list. I apologize for that. However, I wanted to write this because I have noticed that, ironically, as more has become uncovered regarding Guckert, the theories of what the truth is have become increasingly elaborate. However, as we go forward and try to explain to our friends, families, and the media why this story matters, I think it will help to have a coherent message.
I don't claim that this theory is original or "mine". It's just the one that I fnd most plausible.
This diary is based on discussions that took place earlier today in another diary.
Bush: Canadian aide more "pretty" than McClellan
Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 05:48:38 AM PDT
Most of you may already be aware of this. But given the Guckert angle, I thought I'd repost this for comments.
Last year, Bush visited Canada. During that trip, he met
Scott Reid, an aide to new Canadian PM, Paul Martin.
Mr. Bush wandered over during Mr. Reid's chat with the Prime Minister. Mr. Reid introduced himself and shook hands with Mr. Bush.
"Well, what do you do for this guy?" the President asked as he pointed to the Prime Minister.
"Well, you know, sir, I can't really say," Mr. Reid said. "It's not that I don't want to. It's just that, you know, I don't really know from day to day."
This is true. Mr. Reid handles a number of files and performs a number of different duties, depending on the issue and the day.
The President chuckled. "Well, you got a pretty face," he told the surprised Mr. Reid. He wasn't done. "You got a pretty face," he said again. "You're a good-looking guy. Better looking than my Scott [McClellan] anyway."
Don't fall for the Jordan Eason propaganda
Thu Feb 10, 2005 at 07:09:16 AM PDT
Yet another manufactured outrage, don't buy it.
I have read several Kossacks, including Kos himself, prematurely accept, or at least entertain the idea, that Jordan was out of line.
I presume that the wingnuts are full of shit until proven otherwise. I suggest you do likewise.
I have not read an actual transcript of Jordan's comments. However, a brief tour through the LGF/Powerline/Instacracker blogghetto reveals that Jordan has subsequently explained that, in using the term "targeted", he was distinguishing killings from those of "collateral damage". In other words, you can read Jordan's words as distinguishing the killing of journalists that occurred when the journalists were misidentified as threats from incidents were journalists were merely caught in the crossfire or incidents were ordinance went astray.
Open apology to Harry Reid
Wed Feb 02, 2005 at 10:06:54 AM PDT
I admit it. I was wrong.
I was one of the skeptical. Okay, I was more than skeptical. I considered Reid's elevation to Senate Minority Leader to be deeply disconcerting. (I may have used the phrases "GOP-lite" and "concession Democrat". Oh, yeah. And "Reid Sucks".) We just had a Senate Leader from a non-blue state. Now we were going down the same path again? With an anti-abortion rights Senator to boot?
